Season 2 of Good Girls sees the three best buds falling ever deeper into the criminal underworld. And as the stakes get higher the impact of their misdeeds spread wider and wider to their loved ones with devastating effects.
This season sees rifts starting to open up in the core friendship. Ruby (Retta) and Annie (Mae Whitman) are mostly still participating out of necessity and desperation, but would prefer to get out. It’s becoming clear though that Beth (Christina Hendricks) is more than a little bit addicted to both the underworld and her interactions with Rio (Manny Montana). This causes tension within the group especially when Ruby’s cop husband, Stan (Reno Wilson) gets dragged in.
In the meanwhile, the FBI is closing in, all of Annie’s romantic encounters are blowing up in her face and Mary Pat has a lot to answer for.
This season had some amazing episodes. Once again Beth’s realisation that she’s been sleepwalking through her life and letting Dean (Matthew Lillard) run the show for way too long is so cathartic to watch. The chemistry between Hendricks and Montana is absolutely electric and it’s hard to decide if you want them to kiss each other or kill each other.
I loved the episode where Mary Pat’s (Allison Tolman) full sordid past came to the surface. It was both hilarious and heartbreaking because it’s quite obvious that Mary Pat’s situation has been fuelled by a system that simply does not care about her.
Once again the realism remains in place because most of the time the trio’s plans backfire on them and their lucky escapes are limited to the point that they are believable. The overriding feeling that you get from the show is that crime doesn’t pay and isn’t worth it.
I have to admit that it didn’t grab me quite as much as the first season but I still really enjoyed it and I feel like there is some more left to explore. Highly recommended.
